A recognizable face from TV and movie appearances, (Comedy Central, Mr. Show, the Tenacious D movie, Conan O'Brien, VH1's Best Week Ever) Paul's hilarious set on Impersonal touches on subjects as varied as jazz, to those joke peanut brittle cans, to genetic engineering with his biting intellect. The Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist of 2003 continues with another great release on 2007's Walk On. Her soulful vocals, classic Nashville backing band, mixed with her lyrics of strength and southern charm makes 'Walk On' a joyful listen.
Bardi Johannsoon, the man behind Iceland's Bang Gang, creates atmospheric down-tempo soundscapes. Often with the help of an unnamed female vocalist, You takes you on many journey's and explores the many facets of electronic based music.Seattle duo, DJ Sabzi and Geologic make up Blue Scholars, who run their own label called MassLine Records. The diverse backgrounds of the two men, Geologic's informed social conscious lyrics, and Sabzi's soul-influenced throw-back beats to the days of Native Tongues create a totally refreshing addition to the current hip/hop scene with The Long March.
On Paul Wright's Kingdom Come his well-produced songs built on the foundation of his smooth voice and acoustic guitar are the perfect vehicle for the lightly masked songs on God, love and inspiration.Kneebody create an original jazz sound with their juxtaposition of raucous drums with smooth, catchy keyboard and horn lines. Mixing cool jazz, fusion, hip/hop and rock, they sound like jazz in Low Electrical Worker but will never be constrained by those limited boundaries.
Venezuela's own Panasuyo is a talented singer/musician/producer. His album Monte y Culabra mixes traditional Venezuelan with rock and electronic influences. The independently released self-titled album from Los Angeles' Meiko showcases her incredible knack for beautiful, memorable melodies.
DJ 2 Tall presents us with his fluid production to support Dudley's (formerly known as Declaime) unique part singing/part talking style, and Muldrow's classic voice that never overpowers the vibe of these lounge-like tracks on Beautiful Mindz. Our very own (Brooklyn) band has descended upon us in a very large way this year. An important part of the Brooklyn scene for years, A Place to Bury Strangers' release this year amalgamated the Brooklyn esthetic of DIY, youth and originality into an album (in the truest sense of the word) of modern songs carried by the very loud, jarring instrumentation of the band.
